One Person Unicorn Companies

Unicorn businessman illustrationWith the advent of vibe coding tools, a lot of virtual ink has been spilled about the much sought one person unicorn company. So let's take a quick look at what would be required of such a person.

Technical expertise

This is a full stack developer that is familiar with the front end, back end, database optimization, security, technical issues that arise from building something at scale, etc.

UX knowledge

They have to know what good design and user patterns look like, but they also have to have profound empathy for their users.

Business & Operations

They have to know how to set up a business (registration, legal, health insurance, markings, PnL, payments, taxes, negotiating partner deals, raising rounds, etc.

GTM strategy

It's not enough to know how to build something, they also have to know how to price it, launch it, differentiate it, and reach their initial customers.

Marketing

Once their product is launched, they need to keep it in front of potential customers and convert existing customers into evangelists. They have to know how to position the product and tell a compelling story visually, in text, and in placement of those touch points, all as cost effectively as possible.

Sales

The individuals may discover the product of their own accord, but larger customers require relationships and constant wooing.

Stamina

Have you looked at this list? That's a lot for any given individual to know, much less be good at. And it's exhausting, which is why most people build teams to do all of this.

Paranoia

I guarantee someone else is working on the same idea with a team, possibly with money. Are you going to be able to outcompete them?

When I look at this list, it very much looks to me like a Technical Product Manager + Business + Marketing experience. And if I had taltented TPMs, I would be doing whatever I could to hold onto them.
